Telehealth visits
Video follow-up appointments through athenahealth. Especially useful if you are travelling a distance to reach us.
First visits are in person
Dr. Geller sees every new patient in the office. Initial consultations are not done by video — for surgery or for medical weight loss. A first visit means a proper history, an examination, and an hour face to face before any plan is made. There is no substitute for it.
Once you are an established patient, almost all follow-up can be done by video. That has proven especially valuable for patients driving in from a distance, who would otherwise spend half a day on the road for a twenty-minute conversation.
Some follow-up still has to happen in the office — pre-operative visits, post-operative wound checks, and anything else hands-on. We will tell you which is which when you schedule.
Follow-up for the medical weight loss program runs particularly well by video, once you have been seen in the office.
The practice uses athenahealth, which has telemedicine built in. There is no software to install. Your appointment reminder contains a link — click it at your appointment time and you are connected.
Before your video visit
A telehealth appointment is a real appointment. Please treat it as one.
- Use a stand if you are on a phone or tablet. This is a two-way video call and a steady camera matters.
- Check your internet connection ahead of time.
- Find good lighting — ideally facing a window or lamp rather than backlit.
- Choose a quiet, private room where you can speak freely about your health.
- Allow the full appointment time. Do not schedule it against something else.
- Have your medication list and any recent lab results within reach.
Please do not attempt your appointment while driving. If these conditions are not met, the appointment may be cancelled and cancellation fees will apply.
Where you have to be
Dr. Geller is licensed in Kentucky and Indiana. Telemedicine is regulated by the state you are physically located in at the moment of the appointment, not the state you live in, so you must be physically present in Kentucky or Indiana during your video visit.
This catches people out more often than you would think. If you live in Kentucky but will be at your daughter's house in Ohio that week, or travelling for work, or on holiday out of state, the appointment cannot go ahead from there and will need to be rescheduled. Tell the office when you book if you expect to be away, and we will find a date that works.
If something goes wrong
If the link does not work, if your connection fails, or if you cannot get the video started, call the office at (502) 893-7151 rather than waiting. We would rather sort it out than have you miss the visit.
Telehealth coverage may also depend on your insurance plan. The office can confirm that when scheduling.
